The first part of our excursion will take us through the majestic Andean mountains. Then, we will visit the town of Huancarani which contains the funerary towers of Ninamarca, a cemetery of the Pre-Inca Lupaca Culture, which we will visit briefly on our way to Paucartambo, which is known as the folklore capital of the Cusco district. Faced with modern times, this small colonial town has managed to maintain its rich tradition for centuries and centuries. At noon we will arrive at the entrance to the Manu National Park and access one of the most protected natural areas in South America. We will continue in our private transportation along a dirt road and through the thick fog from which this section of the jungle takes its name. Finally we will arrive at the home of the exotic Peruvian national bird, the “Cock of the Rocks”, where it is known to gather with others of its species for a kind of social gathering that seems reminiscent of a grand courtship. It is an amazing spectacle complete with an impressive range of sounds and colors that can only be found in the jungle. The first night we will stay in the beautiful Lodge, where we will arrive at approximately 5:00 p.m.
This morning from the clear waters of the Alto Madre de Dios River we will enter the clay-laden waters of the Manu River, after leaving our lodge at 3:30am we will head towards the Port of Atalaya and from there we will continue our trip by boat and from there we will sail directly to the Reserved Zone of the Manu Park. The beaches, especially in the dry season, are filled with nesting and feeding birds such as herons, egrets, Orinoco geese, terns and skimmers, to name a few. Some beaches are home to black and white alligators (South American relatives of alligators) and side-necked turtles. Hundreds of sand-colored nightjars roost during the day on logs and beaches, and there is a chance of encountering a sunbathing jaguar, the third largest cat in the world. In 1999 one in three of our trips saw jaguars in Manu. We will see some species of primates on this river trip, possibly red howler monkeys or the smaller squirrel monkeys. After having lunch next to the river we will arrive at our Safari Camp near Cocha Salvador Lake.
