Description

In the Amazon department of Madre de Dios, the Tambopata National Reserve displays its wealth in the form of colors, sounds, heat and life. Mammals, birds, reptiles and butterflies are shown without reservation; thousands of kinds of trees and flowers greet us as we pass; and aquatic creatures in their natural habitat play with our curiosity, sometimes posing for the camera. Tambopata is perfect for discovering the jungle. And fall in love with her forever.

Itinerary

DAY 1: MADRE DE DIOS RIVER – MONKEY ISLAND – NIGHT EXCURSION

Upon arrival at the airport or bus station, we’ll go to our boat to sail for around 40 minutes to get to our lodge. Then, we visit Monkey Island, if we are lucky we will see different species of monkeys, and hopefully observe sloths and turtles.

After lunch, we are going to walk for two hours in the tropical forest, on our trails you will always have the opportunity to see wildlife.

At night, we take our boat to go in search of nocturnal animals, we have the opportunity to see alligators, owls, nightjars, and the world’s largest rodent capibaras.

DAY 2: SANDOVAL LAKE – INDIGENOUS FAMILY – NIGHT WALK

In the morning, we are going to sail to get to Chuncho Clay Lick (the majestic spectacle of colors and sounds of these birds). At the same time, we enjoy our breakfast. Time after, we go back looking for capybaras, monkeys, alligators, the Jaguar, or Anaconda if we are lucky.

In the afternoon, we return to the city taking the same road that led us to the first hotel, and then take a vehicle to reach Yacumama Lake (there we’ll fish piranhas, the same ones that will be returned to the lake, also we’ll observe a variety of wildlife, and finally the most stunning sunset).

DAY 3: SANDOVAL LAKE – MATSHIGUENKA FAMILY – NIGHT WALK

Early, we’ll walk along a wooden path of almost 3 km (1.8 miles) to get to Sandoval Lake. In this journey we might see black caimans, giant otters, herons, turtles, monkeys, macaws, and much more, we return to the lodge before noon for our lunch.

In the afternoon, we’ll visit a Matsiguenka family (tribe), we will learn to use bows and arrows, to spin and weave cotton to make their clothing called (Cushma), they also teach us to make ropes using the bark of plants and finally show us their ingenuity to make fire just using nature.

At dusk, we will go into the trails in search of nocturnal wildlife such as sloths, arachnids, insects, reptiles, night monkeys, and others. 

DAY 4: MONKEY ISLAND – HANGING BRIDGES – KAYAK ADVENTURE 

After breakfast, we will visit Monkey Island located in the middle of the Madre de Dios River, there are different species of monkeys, we can also feed them with fruits of the region, and with luck, we can also spot sloths and turtles.

In the afternoon, we will walk along a path talking about the giant trees until we arrive at one of them with more than 700 years old, we start at the same time with the hanging bridges that are installed between the trees, and you will witness the rich fauna that has this level of the forest called “canopy” while we walk along the bridges you could see toucans, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, monkeys, lizards, orchids, epiphytes plants and other things.

Then, we embark on a KAYAK adventure (our guide provides us with life jackets) for safety. We paddle along the Madre de Dios riverbanks, keeping an eye out for wildlife: endangered turtles, white caimans, kingfishers, herons, and if we’re lucky, anacondas. By noon, we’re back at the hotel.

DAY 5: LOCAL FARM - PUERTO MALDONADO CITY – AIRPORT OR BUS STATIONS

After breakfast, we go to visit a farm (local crops) where we will learn to graft plants and see soil types, we can also taste and see typical plantations of the rainforest, such as coffee, different types of cocoa, bananas, and among others. (optional excursion)

We leave to the city after our lunch, we stop by the office for our transfer to the airport or bus station.
