In the Amazon department of Madre de Dios, the Tambopata National Reserve displays its wealth in the form of colors, sounds, heat and life. Mammals, birds, reptiles and butterflies are shown without reservation; thousands of kinds of trees and flowers greet us as we pass; and aquatic creatures in their natural habitat play with our curiosity, sometimes posing for the camera. Tambopata is perfect for discovering the jungle. And fall in love with her forever.

Itinerary

DAY 1: MADRE DE DIOS RIVER – TROPICAL FOREST – NIGHT EXCURSION

After picking you up at the airport or bus station, we’ll go to the office for registration. Then we will take our vehicle and drive for about an hour to the community of Filadelfia, there we’ll take a boat and sail Tambopata River to reach our lodge.

Time after, we have a walk of two hours in the jungle, and you will see a great variety of medicinal plants and trees that can be more than six hundred years old. We’ll visit a tower of more than 45 meters (148 ft.) to see wildlife such as monkeys, toucans, macaws, squirrels, reptiles, insects, frogs, arachnids, and among others.

At night, we take our boat to look for nocturnal animals that are always on the banks of the River (alligators, nightjars, and hopefully the world’s largest rodent Capybara. 

DAY 2: CHUNCHO CLAY LICK – YACUMAMA LAKE – PIRANHA FISHING

In the morning, we are going to sail to get to Chuncho Clay Lick (the majestic spectacle of colors and sounds of these birds). At the same time, we enjoy our breakfast. Time after, we go with our boat into the small branches of the Tambopata River in search of wildlife.

In the afternoon, we return to the city taking the same road that led us to the first hotel, and then take a vehicle to reach Yacumama Lake (there we’ll fish piranhas, the same ones that will be returned to the lake, also we’ll observe a variety of wildlife, and finally the most stunning sunset).

DAY 3: SANDOVAL LAKE – INDIGENOUS FAMILY – NIGHT WALK

Early, we’ll walk along a wooden path of almost 3 km (1.8 miles) to get to Sandoval Lake. In this journey we might see black caimans, giant otters, herons, turtles, monkeys, macaws, and much more, we return to the lodge before noon for our lunch.

In the afternoon, we’ll visit a Matsiguenka family (tribe), we will learn to use bows and arrows, to spin and weave cotton to make their clothing called (Cushma), they also teach us to make ropes using the bark of plants and finally show us their ingenuity to make fire just using nature.

At dusk, we will go into the trails in search of nocturnal wildlife such as, sloths, arachnids, insects, reptiles, night monkeys, and among others. 

DAY 4: OPTIONAL EXCURSION – HANGING BRIDGES – AIRPORT OR STATION

After breakfast, we will walk along a path talking about the giant trees until we arrive at one of them with more than 700 years old, right there we start at the same time the hanging bridges that are installed between the trees, you will witness the rich fauna that has this level of the forest called “canopy” while we walk along the bridges you could see toucans, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, monkeys, lizards, orchids, epiphytes plants and other things.

Later, we return to the city to pick up the luggage in case you have left it in the office, then we go to the airport or if you have a bus ticket we go to the bus station.
